COPPER & GOLD

Davao Oriental

Brief Geology

CILMMRC’s small-scale mining area in Calapagan is mainly underlain by quartz diorite body, which is a part of Miocene Cateel Quartz Batholith. This diorite, which is the host rock of high- grade copper and iron deposits, intrudes the hydrothermally altered sequence of sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The diorite is medium to coarse grained, is massive, and can be light grey to dark grey. The essential minerals are made up of hornblende, feldspar, and quartz. When weathered it becomes sandy and soft. It is characterized by joints, fractures, and gouged out when transected by faults. The copper mineralization occurs as a massive vein type, localized highly in argillized quartz diorite. Vein systems are about 1.2 meters thick and contains sulfide minerals in the form of chalcopyrite, bornite, and pyrite with abundant stains of secondary copper of malachite and azurite. Tons of copper lumps were already extracted in the mine tunnel ranging in grade from 9% to 12% Cu.
