Cagayan River Dredging Project & Magnetite Sand Exploration-

Cagayan Province

It is well known that the Philippines has a long history of magnetite sand mining in the past, until 1977 wherein beach-mining and issuance of off-shore mining permits were suspended for environmental concerns. The suspension of off-shore mining was lifted in 2004.

In 2012, a publication “The Mineral Resources at the Lower Cagayan River” by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Office 2 in Tuguegarao City evaluated the mineral potential of the lower Cagayan River. This river is the major drainage system of the Cagayan Valley comprising the provinces of Viscaya, Quirino, Isabela, Cagayan and portion of the Cordillera Administrative Region.

Remarks

The MGB report states that the Philippines is among the nation’s richest in mineral resources, ranked 3rd in gold, 4th in copper, 5th in nickel and 6th in chromite deposits. Exploration data revealed that the country hosts world-class gold and copper deposits and estimated that the Philippines have about 20% of the world’s nickel resources.

The report also revealed the various mineral resources found in the Lower Cagayan River namely; sand and gravel, magnetite sand, titanium, gold, copper, silver and pyrite. Magnetite is the most economic mineral found in the project area and laboratory tests from samples collected showed the occurrence of iron mineral in the form of magnetite, hematite and native iron ranges from 10%-15% by volume. In consideration to the project area covering about 69 kilometers downstream from the Municipalities of Alcala, Gattaran, Lallo, Calamaniugan and Aparri, the MGB estimated volume of materials for dredging is about 374.4M cubic meters. The estimated Iron Sand reserve at 10% Fe by volume is about 561.6M tons.

The Dredging Permit is in conjunction with the Provincial Governments’ Project in deepening and realigning of the Cagayan River to reduce or totally eliminate bank erosion and flooding within the lower municipalities dissected by the colossal Cagayan River.

Exploration

After months of numerous ocular investigations conducted by the technical staff of CCILMMRC, the company concentrated its mineral exploration activities in 6 municipalities within Cagayan Province namely;

Lallo, Camalaniugan, Aparri, Buguey, Gonzaga and Ballesteros. Within these municipalities, 13 potential prospects for magnetite sand were assessed and evaluated by CCILMMRC.

The MGB’s mineral assessment on the potential of the Cagayan River resulted in the delineation of an inferred resource of 561.6M tons with an average magnetic fraction of 10% Fe. A conservative depth of -9.0 meters was used in the study and depth is open ended. The evaluation covers about 69 kilometers along the lower Cagayan River upstream from the river mouth in Aparri.

The permit is about 15 kilometers long and widths ranging from 800 to 1600 meters wide and roughly 1,200 hectares. An inferred resource of 210.6M tons with an average magnetic fraction of 10% Fe was estimated based on the MGB studies. A depth of -9.0 meters is projected in the resource estimation within the dredging permit.
